DRIVE BACK TO 2001

Branding A Landmark Destination
The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium has been a cherished local landmark, drawing visitors from across the region and beyond. BD&E was thrilled to take on the challenge of developing its visual identity and comprehensive exhibit design. During a $17.4 million renovation of the 42,000 square-foot aquarium in 2001 and a new naming partnership with PPG Industries, BD&E created a visual identity, educational exhibit displays, graphics and signage themed around “Diversity of Water.”

The new vision for the PPG Aquarium was for visitors to walk through an immersive experience about different types of water and aquatic animals from all over the world. This engagement included creation of major external signage along with internal exhibit signage and displays. This featured floor-to-ceiling wall graphics, a color-coded icon system, interpretive informational displays, modular panels and, most importantly, an atmosphere of excitement for guests of all ages.

For more than 20 years these displays have provided aquarium visitors an enlightening experience in learning about the diversity of water habitats.
