Bash and Pearl on the scent

The Nose Knows

The two most significant months of the year for me are April (my birthday) and August (National Dog Day). In honor of the recognition, indulge me as I brag about my species for a minute.

Did you know dogs can sniff out diseases? Some of us are trained to detect cancer, diabetes and other medical conditions purely from scent. Recently, a study brought together Medical Detection Dogs in Milton Keynes, England, with scientists from the Universities of Bristol and Manchester that showed two pups—Bumper the Golden Retriever and Peanut the Labrador (sounds a lot like Pearl and me, hmm?)—detected Parkinson’s from skin swabs. That means detection years before symptoms.

Pretty cool, right? One more amazing superpower from the canine nation. No wonder we’re man’s best friend.

♥️ Happy National Dog Day to all! ♥️
